Day 14

Settling in to the Glitz and Doom

This was another slow day, but I still liked it that way. We had less than nothing planned for the day. Not even any domestic errands to the stores to pick up boring items.

After the predictably slow start, we went next door to the cafe to get me another one of those greaseburgers. This also gave us a chance to put off any real decision for at least another hour. I really love those grease burgers, almost as much as I love grossing people out by talking about them.

So, after having thoroughly lubricated our alimentary canals, we still had the problem of deciding where to go. Robert came up with a car trip up to Howe Sound for a bit of sightseeing, even though it was pretty cloudy and rainy outside.

So, back in the car with down parkas on and AC cranking. It was a pretty scenic trip despite the weather, seeing us drive up to Squamish and back. As nice as the scenery was, it was still pretty fogged in, though, and I was still pretty distracted with that new Len Deighton novel I'd been spending most of the day reading.

At least it wasn't going to keep me up all night, because I'd have it finished before nighttime. Unfortunately, it wasn't a satisfying finish, being the first book in a new trilogy (for your reference, Hook, Line & Sinker). I could see that I was going to be buying volume 2 in hardbound in no time, just to resolve the cliff hanger, and probably find myself equally dissatisfied with its ending.

This brought us to dinner. We both were feeling a moral obligation to have some salmon, given the area we were staying in, so Robert found us a medium-snoot fish place.

This was tough. I'd been having some nasty cravings for a load of caviar, so I found myself seriously eyeing the $25.00 Russian Caviar appetizer. Could I write this up to a bad case of Gorbie Fever and convince anyone that Perestroika was to blame? Probably not...

As much as I like caviar, and as much as I like GOOD caviar, I eventually decided that I didn't like it $25 worth, or at least not that evening. So, I settled on splitting a smoked sturgeon appetizer with Robert, and a cup of clam chowder all to myself.

For dinner, I had a slab of grilled swordfish, just to be contrary. It was pretty good, even if it wasn't the salmon I was supposed to be eating, and was served with two scoops of Cuisinart Carrots, a few inches of semi-scalloped potato, and a piece of broccoli that'd been dropped into a stew pot for a few seconds. Had all sorts of little bits of stew caught in its leaves, too. Not too shabby, mostly, except that the scoops of Cuisinart Carrots looked a lot like the #3 dinner in that restaurant in the movie "Brazil."

Finally, we stumbled back to the motel for another can of that great Canadian Coke. I finished off that Len Deighton book, got really upset at the non-ending, and tried to calm down by watching a really stupid and/or funny SciFi weenie show which I hope was locally produced.

On to Day 15. Blessed Boredom
